Strathyre Girls Home

Strathyre Girls Home in Kensington Johannesburg is one of the DotUnity beneficiaries. Mint has been involved in supporting Strathyre since early in 2012, and has embarked on a number of quarterly hands-on initiatives since the relationship got off the ground.

Some of the items we have been able to assist with thusfar include:
* purchased and delivered washing machine,
* collected and delivered baby items,
* delivered bath sheets for 50 girls,
* on-going donation towards monthly grocery bill (lunch boxes & toiletries),
* 2012 Winter Vegetable garden: Planting of veg garden,
* planted 4 olive trees planted,
* purchased two lawn mowers, kitchen appliances, cutlery & crockery

Previous Hands on initiatives include:

•Sanding and painting of jungle gyms (Steel)

•Sanding and varnishing of play

equipment (Wood)

14th Sept 2012 Hands-on initiative feedback :

18th May 2012 Hands-on initiative feedback :

•Vegetable garden: Preparing and planting of Winter vegetable garden
•Planting of 4 Olive Trees which were kindly donated by Olea.

17th February 2012 initiatives completed:

• Purchase and delivery of a top loader washing machine
• Donations of clothing and purchasing of additional clothing and toiletries/nappies
for an 18 month old baby girl recently taken into the home for care.
• Purchased & delivered bath towels for 60 girls.

On-Going initiatives:

•Donation towards toiletries & monthly grocery bill -R700 p.m
•Toiletries (Vaseline, bath soap, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner) for the girls

What’s still on the wish list:
• Donating old Mint Laptops for Media Centre – 2 x PC’s
• Lounge suites for 3 x houses, Book racks for 3 x houses
• 60 x mattresses to be purchased (and bases)
• Pillows for the Girls

On 26th April, we will be planting the 2013 Winter vegetable patch. We are very grateful to Monkey Fountain Nursery and petshop for donating the seedlings, compost and potting soil for this initiative.
